  1. Set yourself apart with a killer resume

Without a good resume, none of the rest of this advice is going to matter because it’s your resume that’s going to get you in the door and show companies that it’s worth their time to consider you for a job at all.

Make sure your resume follows a standard, easy-to-read format. If you’re not completely sure what that would look like, search the web for a resume examples page to get some ideas you can work with. Make sure you list your accomplishments and back it up with stats and data, rather than offering a passive recitation of your experience.

Recruiters want to know what you were able to achieve in your past jobs. Most importantly, don’t just send the same resume out to every company. Tailor it to the job posting and highlight the most relevant facets of your experience. If the job posting emphasizes certain keywords, make sure to echo those keywords exactly in your resume.

  1. Mine your network connections

When it comes to finding a great job, it’s all about who you know. Well, who do you know? Make sure your friends, family, past colleagues, former clients, and anybody else you can think of know you’re hunting for a job and would be very appreciative of any leads they could pass on to you.

It’s nice to have space where you can be your true self, let your freak flag fly, and say whatever you want to say. If you’re job hunting, however, your accessible social media profiles aren’t that space. Whatever your prospective employers can find out about you on social media should be uncontroversial and inoffensive. Don’t give them any reason not to want to hire you.

Asking the right questions and demonstrating your knowledge and interest in the company can often be the thing that pushes you to the top of the list. After the interview, send a thank you note and be patient about waiting for them to get back to you.

There are always going to be disappointments, near misses, and mix-ups on any ongoing job search. There may be times when it feels like you’ll never find the job you want but the key is not to succumb to that kind of thinking.
