One of the biggest reveals at last year’s Detroit Auto Show was that, after a hiatus of eight years, the Ford Ranger would be returning to North American markets. While the Ranger may never have had the name recognition of its more famous cousin, the F-150, it has earned a dedicated following in South America where it was a mainstay of the Ford brand for years. And this year, industry watchers got a sneak peak at the vehicle that will be hitting sales lots in time for the 2019 release season.
While the last new Rangers in North America launched at the beginning of the decade, the Ranger that is making its comeback is not the same vehicle North Americans might be familiar with. Where the traditional Ranger was a compact pickup truck designed to be a smaller alternative to Ford’s famous F-series, the 2019 Ranger has been upgraded to a midsize that will be available in SuperCab and SuperCrew body styles as well.
Since the Ranger made its appearance in Detroit, auto industry experts have been weighing in on what they think of this updated version of a classic Ford truck, with many noting its strong capabilities as an off-road workhorse. The engine is reputed to be a 2.3-litre turbocharged EcoBoost four-cylinder specially modified to work in a truck, which is good news for shoppers interested in a truck that can get the job done efficiently, and it will be available with both four-wheel drive and a four-mode Terrain Management System designed to improve its off-road capabilities. The Terrain Management System will adjust elements like throttle response, gear selection, and traction controls to deliver next-level performance in rough conditions like mud, snow, gravel, and sand.
Shoppers in the Greater Toronto Area who want to take the Ranger out for a test drive should keep an eye on the offerings at Colony Ford Lincolnin Brampton. Colony Ford, family owned and operated for over 45 years, has earned a strong reputation for providing cutting-edge deals on the very best new Ford vehicles. While the Ranger is not expected to hit showrooms until early 2019, Ford aficionados who need a new vehicle this year may want to consider one of the many other excellent options from the 2018 line-up. While the Ranger is clearly designed to provide a serious off-road vehicle to compete with other major brands, there are other Ford trucks, like the F-150 Lariat and F-150 XLT, that offer hauling power and muscle to help drivers navigate everything from heavy duty construction jobs to gritty farm work.
Ford is one of the most recognizable names in the North American automotive industry, and it has built its reputation on being willing to constantly innovate and move with the times. Its willingness to re-imagine old classics and explore adjustments necessary to make a particular vehicle thrive in different markets has been one of the major keys to its ongoing success. With the new Ford Ranger, the Ford Motor Company has once again proved that it is willing to innovate to stay in touch with its customer’s needs.
