The music industry is and it has always been one of those industries where it is almost impossible to make a name for yourself. There are a few chosen people that are lucky enough to have their voices heard and their dreams coming true. Right? Well, in recent years, a lot of things have changed all around the world, in every industry, and music is no exception.
If we would have had this conversation more than 10 years ago, the concept of a self-made music star would have been something very vague, given the fact that the industry was far more exclusivist back then. But once technology and social media started to rise, everything has changed, and self-made music stars have started to come out from everywhere.
The Rise of Youtube
Back in the old days, if a person wanted to become a music star, they had to do everything humanly possible in order to get a record deal. If you weren’t assigned to a label, you had zero chances to become a music star. Some people tricked the system, and went on to audition for national talent shows. Some of them became international superstars, but that number of people is really small.
Around 10 years ago, Youtube started to become big. It has been around since 2004, but nobody really cared about it until 2008 or later. And once this video streaming platform became internationally known and used by millions of people, some singing passionates have gone viral. There’s no better example of one such case, than the pop superstar Justin Bieber. He is now one of the best selling artists of all time, and for him, it all started on Youtube.
And since Justin Bieber, a bunch of other artists have made their voices heard and became famous through Youtube. This is how the first self-made music stars came out into the world.
The Age of Social Media
Many other doors have opened for self-made music stars, once social media became a thing. Social media has been around for more than 10 years, but the last few have been crucial for the way everything works in the world. Nowadays, every company, every movement, every campaign and business in the world, if they want to survive on the market, needs at least one social media account. It’s the era where everyone does everything with a few taps on their smartphone screen, and this is how they find new music too.
As an aspiring artist, social media is the best place to get yourself some fans. Actually, nowadays, it might be the only place where you can create a fanbase. This is where you get in contact with people, where you tell them who you are, what you represent, what you stand for and what is the message that you want to spread out into the world. Platforms such as Twitter or Instagram, are the starting point for an interaction between you and music consumers all around the world. These platforms are your selling market, your place to drop some links for music streaming services, or other platforms where people can listen to your music.
On top of Youtube and social media activity, there comes a third piece of this puzzle: music platforms. Music promotion on platforms such as Spotify, have become crucial for aspiring artists.
As we’ve mentioned before, we’re always using our phones and we tend to conduct a good part of our daily activities through them, including listening to music. Nowadays, a very large number of people out there are using a music streaming service, like Spotify, Apple Music or Tidal. The fact that aspiring artists can upload their songs on music platforms such as Spotify or SoundCloud, platforms that millions of people access every single day, is more than amazing.
The world that we live in today is changing so fast, that we can barely keep up. Every human being, every environment, every industry, the music one included. Aspiring music stars nowadays have so many platforms where they can launch their careers. The rise of these kind of artists has been amazing, and the music industry nowadays is full of these young, talented people who made their voices heard. It is truly inspiring.
