Getting that Blog Going? Follow these Tips
When it comes to setting up a blog online, you’ll see all sorts of advice. Unfortunately, much of that advice is technical and difficult to understand. It gets especially difficult if you’re just starting out and have no idea how the lingo works. After all, a technical guide written for people who are already in the industry is not exactly what one would call a starter manual.
Unfortunately, if you can’t figure out how to set up a blog, then you can’t very well enjoy the act of blogging. Luckily, setting up a blog online isn’t especially difficult. Of course, you also have to know what you mean when you say “blogging”. There are a number of things that can be considered blogging, and they’re not all the same. For some, blogging is just a matter of keeping their thoughts and opinions online. For others, a blog is an attempt at making a living off of their writing. Different desires have different set ups.
Making Money from Your Blog
If you’re trying to make money off your blog, the first step is to not do that. If you’re an incredibly good writer, and you’re also incredibly good at marketing and use of social media, you might be able to make blogging part of your living. Yet the simple truth is that there are so many blogs out there that these days, it’s really difficult to do anything that will make enough people notice you and give you money. You have to do something new and original, and there’s simply not much new and original stuff to do.
Free Blog Options
That said, you can set up a blog for free at several different sites. Of course the first place you should look is Feedster. The fact that they are just getting up and going means that your article has a higher chance of being featured on the front page. This type of exposure could launch your blog and following to another level.
Tumblr is a social media site that’s specifically designed for being able to blog. Blogspot is another site that’s specifically designed for blogging. Both of these sites give you a set up tutorial as soon as you sign up, helping you set your blog up to your own designs. There are templates you can use, and those will help you with the appearance.
Share Content Regularly
Once you do that, it’s a matter of writing things regularly, and social media advertising. You’ll want to come up with a theme for your blog, as well. A theme of “here are random things I’m thinking” may work to some degree, but it also means people don’t know what to expect when they go to your blog. That could cause them to decide going to your blog isn’t worth it. Meanwhile, a theme of “here’s my science fiction writing” could be more straight forward.
Domain Name Ownership
Either way, that’s essentially the way to set up an online blog. There other sites you can use, such as WordPress, and those sites allow you to have your own domain name. However, if you’re just starting out in terms of blogging, then you should be using one of the free sites. It will help you get set up, and get established. And you’ll need both of those things if you’re going to get anywhere in the blogosphere.
