How Your Health Habits Impact Workplace Productivity

healthy office lifestyle

Do you want to get ahead in the workplace but you feel like you’re just not able to? It could be because of your productivity or lack thereof.

Employers want to promote the employees that are the most productive and effective in their positions, but what you might not realize is that it can be your health and personal habits that are diminishing your productivity and holding you back in your career.

Having good health is essential for strong productivity levels, and to be the best employee you can be, you need to feel your best.

Research published in Population Health Management showed employees with an unhealthy diet were 66 percent more likely to report a loss in productivity versus employees who ate healthy, for example.

The following are some of the top health habits that play a role in workplace productivity.

Smoking

Smoking is something that many employers grapple with because it can have such a tremendous impact on the workplace. When you smoke, you’re not only losing valuable time with the act itself throughout the day, but you also tend to be less healthy overall. Employees who smoke have been shown to have higher levels of absenteeism, as well as being more likely to have accidents and injuries at work.

Smoking can also lead to chronic health conditions that just generally lead them to feel unhealthy and less focused on work.

If you’re a smoker, try to move toward quitting with something like vaping. Companies like Vapewild offer options online that can be a good stepping stone to not smoking, and ultimately improving your professional life.

Lack of Sleep

If you’re not getting enough sleep you’re never going to feel your best, nor are you going to perform your best. The recommended amount of sleep each night is anywhere from 7 to 9 hours, and just a few minutes of sleep deprivation each night can accumulate and lead to problems such as memory impairment.

Many adults have been sleep deprived for years or even decades, but going to bed just a few minutes earlier each night can help significantly with productivity.

There are a lot of apps and tools available that can help you get a better night’s sleep, such as Sleep Genius. Sleep Genius is one of the top-rated sleep apps in the world, and it is based on science and neurology.

Being Sedentary

If you have a sedentary life, both at work and at home, you won’t feel your best, nor will you perform your best. When you’re at work, try to beat a sedentary situation by getting up and stretching or taking a short walk around the office each hour.

You can also choose an ergonomic desk chair which can help keep your body aligned and prevent the aches and pains that come with sitting for extended periods of time.

Once you’re at home, start getting exercise in small ways, such as taking a walk each evening, and then try to incorporate more physical activity into your life gradually.

Finally, your diet is also pivotal to productivity. Employees who eat a healthier diet have been shown to have better workplace performance, so ditch the processed foods and sugary pick-me-up snacks. Start bringing your lunch to work each day as well as your snacks, and consider using a tool like MyFitnessPal, which is a mobile app with a built-in food library to help you make better decisions every day.
