Why Chose IT?

Before making a life-changing decision, such as turning to a career in IT, you should definitely ask yourself why would you do it. The reasons why this work sector would be appealing to anyone, are countless. But let’s just list the main ones, for the purpose of this article:

  • Job Opportunities. Since the industry is constantly evolving and expanding, the job opportunities are countless. More so, there is a large variety of positions that you can fill. Not everyone who works in IT has to deal with code, so don’t get turned off by that. Actually, you should go through a list of IT job descriptions, just to get a sense of what else can you do if you don’t want to become a programmer and get your hands dirty with code.
  • Job Salary. As much as we like to pretend that we’re in it for helping out the world, or because it is our main passion, we have to face the facts: IT pays very well. Of course, I’m not saying that everyone in IT is in it only for the money, but the salary is indeed a big part of the reason why people choose IT. Every nation in the world is looking to expand, to rely on more technology, and that’s why they tend to pay a lot of money for the people who are willing to help. In the United States, the average salary for a year is somewhere around $50,000. But the average salary per year in IT, is twice as that, which means that after working for a few years in this domain, you could get a 6 figure salary for 12 working months.
  • Job Growth and Challenges. Despite popular belief, working in IT is not about sitting in a chair all day and staring at a screen. This job is as exciting as you make it. There’s always the possibility to grow, to learn, to fill in higher positions in a company; but it all depends on your willingness to try new things and accept different challenges. If you’re working in a multinational company, you’ll always get the chance to travel, go on business trips, meet new people and make new connections. In this industry, there’s always something new coming up.

How To Prepare for The Job

If you have studied computer science in college, or a similar domain, you are ready to go into the field and start working. Well, if you haven’t, it’s alright. Luckily, this industry doesn’t necessarily require higher education in the domain. There are countless academies and courses (online or in class) that you can attend. But be aware of the fact that IT might not be for everyone, as it is a complicated industry, based on mathematics and algorithms.
And even if you are not familiar with coding and programming in general, there’s still a ton of things that you can do in this domain. You can be a business analyst, where you don’t need many technical abilities, or a project manager if you work hard enough. Of course, there’s always the people who love programming and working with databases and networks. Here, the possibilities for jobs are countless: programmer, database administrator, network engineer, software developer, web developer etc.
Working in IT is by far one of the most satisfying jobs that you could get. The path that you have to walk in order to get there is definitely not easy, as you have to study a lot, to put your brain to work and to have a lot of ambition. But at the end of the day, the opportunities, the compensation and the fact that you’re doing something that helps the world evolve, can definitely make IT worthy of your time and effort.
