Child’s Play 2 Review

As you all know I’m a pretty big fan of Child’s Play. With its creative premise and slick execution, it’s easily one of the best slasher films of all time. Its sequel had a lot to live up to and for the most part it delivers.
The movie has a surplus in budget so the effects are probably the best in the series, but the movie veers way too far into comedy. The characters are all well-acted and genuinely great. We have Andy returning in another relatable and sailboat performance.
However, the new characters are likable and the protagonist, quite excellent. We have an interesting adopted family dynamic to dive into and this makes the story more relatable.
Brad Douriff returns for another killer job as the always funny Chucky. The character gets more screen time and the movie suffers and benefits from it. As I stated earlier, the comedy is a bit much. It works most of the time but in others, it just shouldn’t be there.
Sometimes a horrific scene is followed by a misplaced pun or quip from Chucky. However, for the most part this movie works very well as a horror comedy and from start to finish you’ll be entertained with a smile on your face.
Child’s Play 2 is a worthy follow up with awesome characters but unfortunately, it presents a double-edged sword when it comes to comedy. Something that makes up for it is the plot. Like so many horror sequels, it could’ve copied the original and while there are similarities this is a completely new story. It was a breath of fresh air and I admire that.
Overall, Child’s Play 2 is a well made horror sequel that will entertain both casual and die-hard fans. It’s stellar characters, original story, and another iconic performance from Douriff more than make up for the unbalanced moments—and at times, unwanted humor. 8.2/10
