Tales From the Dark Side Review:
Tonight’s late night review is one of my favorite horror anthologies and yet another anthology written by the iconic George Romero.
First off all, the segments are creative and unique. All of them pull no punches and achieve thrilling new levels of creativity. The characters all have fully fledged personalities and are acted to perfection. Steve Buscemi, Christian Slater, Debbie Haley, Julianne Moore, William Hickey, and many more give electrifying performances as they fully dove into their horror centric roles.
The stories themselves only have one flaw. While viscerally acted and vastly interesting, the stories could’ve used more depth, some of them have too much emotional weight to be justified by their short runtime, but they do phenomenally with their given amounts of time.
Then there are the special effects. The practical effects of this film will horrify you from the oozing grey gargoyle to the dust covered mummy. The level of passion and effort put forth into these effects truly is shown in their level of quality.
Amongst his resume are great effects in movies such as Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead, Creepshow, Creepshow 2, and what I consider to be his best Day of the Dead. The effects here truly rise to be some of his best.
Overall, this is a great remake with some passion and heart behind the camera and in the writing. The actors all had spirit and the stories are fantastical, but their depth is lacking. The movie captures a sense of fear and fun, something Romero is used to doing. 7.8/10
