What You Need to Know About Addiction

Most families who bring in their loved ones for heroin detox are usually unaware of how severe this form of treatment is. First of all, it is a big step and the first among many more for a patient who is just diving into recovery. The feeling is surreal, drug addiction is no joke and needs to be tended to actively. Heroin belongs to the opioid family and its consumption directly impacts the nervous system. However, with continued use, an addict’s brain adjusts to the dosage of heroin which is why users often increase the amount with every intake to chase the high they got the first time they took the drug.

Alcohol on the other hand is not as bad as heroin when it comes to addiction. The symptoms are less physical and intense in nature when compared to heroin. However, don’t be fooled! Alcohol addiction is no joke and abusers of the substance are at extreme risk. Unlike heroin, alcohol is widely accepted in most societies so tending to alcohol addiction can be hard. It can be hard to spot an abuser since so many people consume alcohol legally.

For heroin treatments, there are two common drugs that are administered. The first one is methadone and the second one is buprenorphine. The treatments vary slightly but they are able to achieve the desired results if administered in a safe and monitored environment. The abusers need a lot of attention and must be placed under the care of a certified personal. Rehabs are great places for anyone looking to get rid of heroin, alcohol or any other addiction. Medications are usually used so the temptation of consuming the drug gets alleviated. FDA has approved a number of drugs that help with heroin addiction.

Alcohol detox can be done at home or at a rehab. The treatment depends on the severity of the patient’s condition. It is estimated that over seventeen million people abuse alcohol every day in the United States. It’s important to be patient with the abusers, and help them understand that detox is not a simple process that can be achieved over time. It requires some will power and the desire for the person to let go of their habit. It takes at least a couple of weeks for a person to get over their addiction and then a strong will to hold off on future intake.

At the end of the day, whether it’s heroin, alcohol or any other form of addictive substance, addiction is something that has the tendency to take over people’s lives. It can make them do things that they never thought they would. It alters a person’s thought process and the only thing they desire is the drug. This is why whenever a patient is released from a rehab, there is a huge chance of relapse. This is where family and other loved ones come in. They need to keep an eye on the patient to ensure that their recovery goes smooth and continues throughout.
