Lamborghini Aventador SVJ sets new Nürburgring record – 6 minutes 44.97 seconds beats the GT2 RS

Ladies and gentlemen, meet the new king of the Nürburgring, the Lamborghini Aventador SVJ. Though it hasn’t been revealed in full yet, a camouflaged example has managed to set a new production car lap record of 6 minutes 44.97 seconds at the iconic 20.6-km track with Marco Mapelli behind the wheel.

By comparison, the previous record holder, the Porsche 911 GT2 RS, managed a time of 6 minutes 47.3 seconds. Meanwhile, the Aventador SVJ’s stablemate, the Huracan Performante holds a time of 6 minutes 52.01 seconds.

Like its smaller sibling, the Aventador SVJ (SVJ stands for Superveloce Jota) will feature the brand’s Aerodinamica Lamborghini Attiva (ALA) active aerodynamics system with aero vectoring.

According to Lamborghini, data obtained from its intensive CFD simulations warranted a reworking of the Aventador’s active and passive dynamic systems. Revisions include improving the four-wheel drive, rear-wheel steering and ESC systems.

The entire car is also significantly stiffer than the Aventador SV and it comes with specially-developed Pirelli P Zero Corsa tyres as standard – the lap record attempt saw P Zero Trofeo R tyres being used instead.

The Italian carmaker has yet to confirm if there is a power gain from the 6.5 litre V12 but it claims a weight-to-power ratio of 1.98 kg/hp. A generous use of lightweight materials is another factor in pursuing these performance gains.

“The Aventador SVJ takes the Jota suffix, following the Lamborghini tradition for denoting a car’s track-focused talent. This new car is the convergence of Lamborghini technologies to produce a super sports car that transcends current performance benchmarks,” says Lamborghini chairman and CEO, Stefano Domenicali.

While we wait for more details to be furnished to us, Lamborghini has released a full on-board video of the record attempt with full telemetry and GPS verification using VBOX-Racelogic instrumentation. This is to silence the doubters and to keep us entertained. Enjoy.
