House of 1,000 Corpses Review:
I actually have an interesting story to tell about this movie. My first viewing only spurred feelings of hate. I hated every aspect and second of this movie, giving it 0.5/5.

However, on my second viewing, I have come to develop a love for this grimy slasher throwback. This is both the greatest strength and worst weakness of the movie. It’s a no-holds-barred throwback to the TCM Halloween era slasher film that pushes limits without remorse.

The opening to this movie can be seen as brilliant depravity. But due to some nonsensical editing and a ludicrously fun ending, I have come to the conclusion that this is not a well-made film. I’d be lying though if I didn’t say I was smiling from start to finish. From the green and blue tinted lighting, the unforgettable and perfectly acted antagonists, and the beautiful set designs, I loved everything.

Bill Mosley is an unhinged and depraved Charles Manson-esque figure, Sheri Moon Zombie is a delightfully fun serial killer, but the real standout is the show-stealing Sid Haig as Captain Spaulding. He isn’t a modern horror icon for nothing and some of his best moments are in this film.

The protagonists are a real downfall though. They are well acted and likable but have no real personalities outside of witty dialogue and authentic friendship. By the end of the film, I’m still not sure which one of the girls survives and that is without saying a problem.

Nevertheless, this is a horror movie made by a horror fan for horror fans. It’s unrelenting and nonsensical at times but it’s just everything I’ve come to love in a slasher film. I hate to say it but I loved this movie. It’s a bad movie but a great throwback.

Overall, House of 1,000 Corpses is a love letter to slasher films of old and it earns its spot among them without ever having to measure up. 5.4/10
