Wes Craven’s New Nightmare Review:
My return to late night reviews starts with Wes Craven’s return to the Nightmare on Elm Street series. It marks a massive spike in quality but unfortunately, it had the lowest total box office gross of the series. Decades later though, it remains one of the most creative, brilliant, and impressive comebacks in horror history.
First up is the cast. Heather Langenkamp returns as herself in a powerhouse role. She plays someone trying to escape former fame, but at the same time she’s also dealing with a young child and a massive loss. The emotions are high and there couldn’t have been a stronger actress for the role.
The supporting cast is just as phenomenal. They all give surreal performances as mostly themselves. Robert Englund and Wes Craven even have central roles. It creates a break in reality similar to films Wes Craven is known for such as the original Nightmare on Elm Street and Scream. However, this is as far as it gets as it blends horror and reality in a way that becomes hard to distinguish at times.
Robert Englund makes a triumphant return to the role of Krueger in a darker return to the character. He’s more satanic, sadistic, and genuinely scary than he’d been in decades.
The plot is as praiseworthy as well. It mixes what we know as truth with what we know as fantasy to make an impressive story of pain and horror. The effects are top notch, the story is as creative and as original as the original, and the development and handling of the series is as respectful as you would expect from its creator.
Overall, Wes Craven’s New Nightmare is a fitting end to the original series, a much better end than most of the iconic horror series we’ve come across. The spot-on performances and darker tone lead to a scary, impressive, and unforgettable horror experience. 9.4/10
